New Mars, Ecam, Lacam and others will now be classified as 3rd party. GTMedia logo is now removed from Firmwares and releases will be in different place. And also you can do the online upgrade from Mainmenu-->APP-->Update ,if Mars is already installed.

does it make sense to upgrade the V8X to this third party software if you live in North America ?

I would think not, if your receiver does what you require of it, just leave it as it is.
Most of the upgrades are for here in Europe.
