V8 Nova Hard Drive Specs for PVR Functionality

Post by vittles69 »

What type of hard drive (format/capacity/Type) can be used with the V8 Nova Receiver? Does the hard drive need to be powered via AC outlet?

Thanks,

V

Hi.
I have a 2.5 HDD (power through USB) and works fine.
The HDD must formatted in FAT32 or NTFS (like mine). I had some problems with NTFS partition type and I had to reformatted it with Windows OS wizard. If you use another software that change some parameters during the formatting, the V8 Nova will not recognize it.
BTW, my HDD has 2TB capacity and it's recognized well. I use it for PVR and no problems since then.
I'm not sure, but if you format from the V8 Nova, it will be FAT32 type.

Thanks and enjoy it!

Thanks for the info. I have a 1TB unit that I am going to format using Windows OS and try. Have you tried any of the USB Thumb Drives? I have a 128 GB drive I was thinking of trying for programs 1 hour or less in length

Hello again.
Yes, I've tested some of my USB thumb drives (in my case, formatted in exFAT) but they have an issue. They must have an optimal write speed to record HD channels with high bitrate. If they don't, the recorded files will have corruptions due to missing data.
If you're sure with your USB stick, go ahead!

I heard (I said ...I heard because I have not tested) that,
the maximum USB Flash drive size is 64G
It would be great a 2 tera external hard drive though I have no clue if some have tried that
Also the formatted drive it should be FAT32 windows or FAT for Mac. never heard exFAT that work
It would be nice that someone who tries those setting will be able to post results

My Seagate 2TB USB3.0 HDD
Image

Image
Formatted with Windows wizard in NTFS

Image
It's compatible with V8 NOVA to explore and watch content and to use it to PVR.

Note:
Make sure to format in NTFS with Windows wizard and default parameters. If you don't, might be not recognized by V8 Nova.
In my case, my HDD was formatted in NTFS by my old Engel RS4800S. It was recognized by itself, my PC and other devices, but somehow, not by my V8 Nova. Be careful!

Please remember USB slot on GTmedia v8 Nova required USB 2.0 only, But HDD slot USB3.0 is OK

some mistake: USB3.0 can use on USB slot USB2.0 but data speed same as USB2.0

I don't agree at all that V8 Nova requires USB 2.0 slot.
The cable displayed in my image is USB 3.0 in both sides.
Side 1 is 3.0 microB (only for the HDD) and side 2 is 3.0 A. This last one is backward compatible with 2.0, so it can be used without problems.

That's correct! the speed will be 2.0, but the USB cable Port is 3.0.

I cant get my V8 Nova to recognize any hard drive, but it does recognize flash drives. I have a 6TB western digital formatted as NTFS (I formatted it using windows 10). but nothing, I plug it in and it is as if it did not exist.

Thank you for your reply. I made a 64GB partition and it did not work. I have not been able to get any hard drive to work with these units, have you? 32 bit system support 2TB but these units can read NTFS and if so they must read much more than that because NTFS goes up to 16TB

I just formatted a 32GB flash drive in Fat32, exFAT and NTFS and it reads all of them perfectly. But none of my hard drives, does not matter if the hard drives have external power or not and it does not matter what partition size they have or what type. What gives???

I just wanted to give an update to the hard drive situation since nobody in this forum seems to know anything about it or just did not want to help me.

I finally figured out how to make the unit recognize the hard drive and it does not depend on how it is formatted, it recognizes FAT32, exFAT and NTFS just fine, it also does not depend on the brand of hard drive you use, however, the problem lies in the hard drive enclosure you use. I tried it on several enclosures until I found one that worked and it was basically the cheapest I had. (a MATSUNICHI USB 3.0) I was able to do it with a 500GB and a 1TB (which is the largest I have) and they were recognized just fine.

Attached I am sending a picture of the enclosure, it is not the best, basically whenever you put a hard drive in there it is extremely hard to open, so you better test it before closing the enclosure, but it works and that i what's important.

Hi, I have been reading these posts on the matter of external hard drive compatibility. I have a V8 which recognises a thumb drive and will playback movies. Thumb drive is fat32. I also have a WD 3TB external HD formatted in NTFS. The V8 does not recognise it, it does connect as the HD motor turns. From what I have read here NTFS should work but it doesn't. Whats the answer please? Is the V8 faulty?, Should the HD be formatted to FAT32? thanks

All you can do is (test and see) what works for you.

I have been using FTA Receivers for a number of years and have several FTA Receivers and its not just GTmedia but from what i've seen some other brands of FTA Receivers work better with thumbdrives (USB Drives) when formated in FAT32 over NTFS.

Most older FTA Receivers like a small capacity USB Drive (under 2 GB) and have a maximum capacity they will use while some will work with larger ones (10 GB) .

Some newer FTA Receivers (1-3 years old) are allowing the use of larger capacity thumbdrives/USB drives, I recorded movies off my V8 Nova Orange using a (32 GB) - PNY USB drive formatted in Fat 32.

Good Luck ! :D
