Help with Big Ugly Dish - 11Ft

Post by Ivn101 »

Hi Everyone,
I just installed an 11ft Dish. At positions 123w down to roughly 113w I get excellent reception, almost all transponders scan in.
At 125 to 133, signals get gradually weaker, and from about 105w down to 87w I get 1 or 2 transponders at about 40% strength.

I think I need to adjust Elevation/Declination, but don't know which bolt is which. Can someone tell from my pictures?

As well, my Dish will move from 133w only to about 80w or 82w, I wish to reach further east, any ideas based on the pictures?

Thanks to everyone that can help.

Is your mounting pole exactly vertical?? Does your antena main base pointed to your true south (True Not magnetic) from rear of dish?? Set your Dish elevation base on your location. See this instructions and follow them. It should help:

Looks like you have the dish upside down! The third picture shows the declination bolt on the bottom, when it should be on the top.Your latitude bar must be put on upside down?

Those dishes have two bolts, you can see the other one on the right of the last picture and in the first picture.

If you have a satellite due south of you ( due north if you are southern like me) , start there with the dish centered. Get the elevation and skew set.
Also check that as you do up the bolts that clamp the mount to the pole that you get that vertical too.
If the pole is a little out you may be able to correct that with the pole mount bolts.
Then test by moving west or east.

Yes I have one of the same mounts.
There are two so you can adjust the mount from both sides.

I don't know the location of Ivn101,but I assume the dish is located in the Northern Hemisphere by the list of satellites they have mentioned in the request. The declination should be on the top of the latitude bar to track the Clarke belt properly. In the photo I see it on the bottom. Please correct me if I am wrong?C.H.

you are wrong; i have same type (StartTrak) of dish, only is 10', but this is the way was installed by the previous owner, and there is no other way to be mounted (see pic): everything is welded:
10'-2.jpg
the dish is off center, and is mounted as for northen hemi, ny location:
2015-12-19 20.32.07.jpg
..and here another setup of the same type of dish:
6562.jpg
the long vertical bolt is for elevation setup; the short inclined bolt (bottom), is for declination setup.

Okay Thank you lme I stand corrected.I have never seen a set-up like that.So a dealer would secure the mount for each location? You learn something new everyday. There was a dealer in Montreal maybe 35 years ago selling those dishes. Thanks again C.H.

glad to help.
you should follow those instruction attached by cpr43. that's how i set up my dish.
don't forget: the true south setting is the most important. you can find it for your location here "hXXps://www.magnetic-declination.com/", and with the app on your phone you can setup the saddle right. if you got the dish from your area, then is already set on elevation & declination.

You folks are all AWESOME!!

I do have the pole level, more specifically, the top part where the bolts tighten on the pole, that is perfectly level, but thanks for the pointing out.

The dish was bought used locally, about 5 miles north of me, so I suspect a slight declination/elevation change may be required.

When I pointed the dish south, I used 180 on my cellphone compass. THIS might be part of the issue. I didn't do the "minus 10" as per the Magnetic Deviation link. Thank you for that.

The Installation Guide is VERY helpful, thank you for that. The chart in there will assist for sure.
I found an Inclinometer App for my Android phone. I will try that to see if my setup matches the chart.

I will update you all soon as to how I made out, maybe ask for more help if needed.

A BIG THANKS to you all. What a great group to be a part of.

Until next post....., :)

look at the chart 1st. you should be on the same latitude as previous owner, so no need to adjust elevation/declination unless you want to replace the rusted bolts. then you need to go through the process of elevation/declin settings.
that's what i did: left everything as it was, but last summer i replaced the bolts so....more work, but i got it.
as for inclinometer app they are crap: same app on 2 diff phones gives me different readings. digital inclinometer is best.
the same goes for compass apps.

You may find the site dishpointer dot com of help
you can go to your location and select a satellite that is due south of you and it will show a line on Google earth pics that you can then use to point your dish at an object in the distance that you can see on google.

If the dish does not receive the satellite that is due south of you, you do not have a good start.
On that satellite the LNB skew should be horizontal.

"On that satellite the LNB skew should be horizontal"
that depends of the type of lnb or lnbf.

Hi again,
Due south of me, there are no sats, C or Ku, definite disadvantage.
The closest sat I have is 81w C. TVP HD transponder. Not on Lyngsat, but my sky sweeping pulled it up. Very weak signal.

Does anyone have Signal on 91w 4180V30000? It yields no signal, I am wondering if it still exists?

I believe now, after messing around, my issue is my dish is not high enough. On the 125w neighbourhood I have clear sky.
Once I get to the central sats, 91w +/-, my dish is partially obstructed by the side of my house.

Looking at the attached Pic, aimed at 91w, about 30% of dish sees wall.
The height is 7ft to middle of dish.
I think I should raise it to 12ft, so 95% of dish is clear.

Thoughts?

You need to know your location North and South, my location is 35 North and 78 West so my true South satellite is 78.0w, and my North location is 35 so I set my bracket angle to 35, if you set it up this way to start with you want need to move it much to track the ark.

I raised my dish to 14 ft center height, so it clears the house walls (mostly, 80% clear).
Also made sure pole is plumb.
Adjusted Elevation on 81 Arsat2 (no pics but Transponders measure signal)
Adjusted Declination on 133w.

Went back and forth a few times on adjustments.

Now working excellent!

Thank you to everyone here on this sight.

Hi, Sorry for the delay in responding.

There were many Non-TV transponders that lit up on 81w at that time.
I can't find any now, but I think that might be because of my adjustments on the dish.

However, I actually was receiving a TV Station back then.
Although Lyngsat said everything was South America, I received one Spanish station.

TVP, on 3790H5600
PID v34, a32 aac, p34, SID 51

At that time, signal quality was as high as 80 for me, signal was in 90's.

I have not seen that station since some time in Aug, end of the month.

If anyone does see it, let us know.
Might have returned to a South American Spotbeam.

Thanks!

Most TPs that are in the 3700 range are changing to 3800 and higher because of 5G network blocking anything below 3800 so the odds are that the CH has changed it's TP.
