GT Media D2 Radio Fault

Can anyone help. My D2 was working perfectly, then suddenly the display went blank and the radio stopped working. you could still see the backlight glowing dimly. No buttons worked, so I removed the battery and reinserted. The radio attempted to start with the red DAB screen for a second, then went blank again and no functions. The battery is ok and is the same on external supply. I can get into the firmware upgrade by applying power and holding the function button. I can see the device on my PC. I tried the firmware upgrade using the method on this forum. It says Firmware upgraded successfully, now rebooting. But then the RED DAB screen appears as before for a second, a thump from the speaker, and then the display is blank again with a dim back light. you have to remove the power to make the back light go out. switching on again the same cycle repeats. Any ideas on this please? it was working fine before!
