ATSC 3.0 w/ DRM - How to troubleshoot?

Post by sonnik »

I am in the process of setting up my X1...

-Tried out of the box settings. I think LonTV had a video where DRM should work out of the box; it didn't - so I added Wifi
-Firmware is up to date (Y410.A11.1.4 and player software 35.2.35a)
-Have tried factory resets / disconnecting power
-Signal looks good (see below) - on par or better with a lot of ATSC 1.0
-Unencrypted ATSC 3.0 with a worse signal indicated works fine.

Strength is -37 dBm (green) and quality is 33 dB (green) on the initial check/test screen. (RF Channel 27 551 MHz 6M ATSC 3.0 Signal Locked). When I go to tune and view, I'm getting "Buffering ... (DRM)"

Am I missing some guidelines or trick to get the device to play well with ATSC 3.0/DRM? I didn't see anything here, nor in the manuals. I'm reaching out on AVSForum to see if anyone else in my market is having an issue.

I have two X1 boxes and I can open DRM ATSC 3.0 without Ethernet or Wifi connection to the Internet. It could be the broadcaster. What is your location?

GTMEDIA does have HDTV Player v2.36 available on Google play store. .

Have you tried DRM with an internet connection?

Thanks. I'm in the Phoenix AZ market. I'm still waiting on an answer over at AVS Forum to see if anyone can confirm reception of DRM channels as well.

I have tried it out of the box (no connection), added wifi connection, factory reset, added connection again, etc. I'm using Wifi, and from what I saw from the Antenna Man on YT; this is the same as what he did. (His market did need an active connection). Come to think of it, I suppose I could troubleshoot my firewall to see if anything is interfering there.

The EPG for these channels is displayed, so I'm leaning towards this being a DRM only issue. (If I recall from ATSC 1.0, the program guides were on a separate transport stream in the same overall broadcast).

Additional information, all of the market's "big" affiliates (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) and two independents are on this RF Channel (KASW RF 27). All of them have the encryption flag turned on. I've seen some state that it could be on the broadcaster side. I know that ATSC 3.0 is a bit unique, so I don't know if they have one broadcast engineer that is managing all of these channels on this one RF frequency. That is, I'm trying to figure out why they would *all* be exhibiting this behavior if it's a matter on the broadcaster side.

Thanks for the tip on 2.36; I was hesitant to add my account to the device due to the older Android version.

I took the 2.36 update. I also tried my phone's mobile hotspot in an attempt to bypass any connectivity issues.

When tuning I do see a pop-up at the bottom of the screen that "network connected" (this has been the case whenever I have network connectivity)- so I imagine something in ATSC 3.0 is triggering network access. I'm not sure if it's a DRM key or some other telemetry that the standard uses.

I'm curious as to what is being connected to, so I may research this either way.

I'm still stuck with Buffering/DRM message.

There is no security issue with this Android 11 box. It is official Android. The highest level the Amlogic SoC 905Y4 can get to is Android 12. Lon is wrong about any security issue....I saw his YT. You don't have any credit card info on the box?

Check out antenna issues in your area for DRM on the AVS forum. I have a thread started for the X1 under HDTV/HDTV Technical /GTMEDIA X1. Follow it for help.

Got it, thanks for pointing me to that thread. I will read through it later.

How does one get support for the device? I've emailed the address shown on the Settings/About screen in the HDTV Player app and haven't heard a response.

For region selection, you can check the antenna you are using on this website to see if it has insufficient power

I am in the Phoenix area as well and getting the same issue. I am on the same version of app and firmware. I verified my antenna is in range and all non ATSC 1.0 Channels come in perfectly. But ATSC 3.0 Channel just say "Buffering DRM" on a black screen indefinetly.

Alan Li has been provided a TS stream of the Phoenix area to investigate your issue as well as the other users problems with ATSC 3.0 tuning. Hopefully he can provide an update soon.

That may have been a stream I sent. As I posted on AVSForum, I can decode the subchannels that were previously noted as "signed" (12,15,61) - but not the ones that were at least previously noted as "unsigned" (5,10,45). (It is unclear if they are still configured as signed/unsigned).

For reference: 15/61 are operated by Scripps, 10/45 are Fox Owned and Operated, 5 is Gray, 12 is Tegna.

I have requested a support ticket to KASW/KNXV (licensee of RF 27) to see if this is in their scope or if they want me to reach out to Gray/Fox.

Hola. Como puedo ver los canales en mi gtmedia nova8,
Please what channels?

If the channels you want are ATSC 3.0 as per this topic, then NO the V8 Nova can not see them.
The V8 Nova is Satellite only.

Issue resolved; there was seemingly an issue on the station's side. I had called yesterday and my concern was added to a ticket while they were in making a tweak for CBS and the NCAA tournament. I did not have to rescan. I did see an issue where CBS blacked out after a moment, but this may have just been a momentary glitch, as the Fox affiliate is fine.
